During the very first class of Future Proofing PDP 3 on 18/09/2018, the main task for this class’s assignment was introduced by class lecturer, sir Alexander Manners to the students in class. To complete this subject, students were assigned to organize a fashion event which will be held on Week 15 and presented on Week 16 before the semester ends. To begin with, students were assigned to work in pairs to propose and present an interesting fashion event to the class within a week’s time frame. Details such as event purpose, activities, budget plan, week by week of progress timeline, teams and so on were needed to be thought thoroughly and explained during the presentation. A further research of different types of fashion events being held in the current fashion industry was conducted individually before settling down a decision.
A few options were being considered:
1. Fashion presentation
2. Fashion Ted talk
3. Fashion bazaar
A final decision was made which was the first option, fashion presentation as the event is fresh, up to date and appealing. Fashion presentation has been proven as another refreshing medium for designers to showcase their collection compared to the traditional runway (Singer, 2015). Buyers are able to get a closer look on the collections, communicate with designers and place their orders (Tungate, 2014).
INITIAL EVENT PROPOSAL

Initial concept
The initial concept was a fashion presentation featuring 3 local designers (Kittie Yiyi, Motoguo and Man Chien) to showcase their collections in MAPKL, Publika. The purpose of the event is to allow the public to experience a fashion presentation event which is a rare sight in Malaysia. Besides, the event allows fellow Malaysians and tourists to get to know and support the Malaysian fashion designers and industry. The ambiance of the event is going to be very chill as visitors are going to socialize, looking at designer pieces, models and taking pictures. Models won't walking, but standing or posing throughout the presentation so the audience are able to have a closer look of the pieces. The estimated amount of audience would be 100 - 200 people as the venue is able to fit that amount of people. The theme of the event will depend on the inspiration behind the designer’s collection. 2 of the designers selected are famous for their quirky style approach while Man Chien produces artistic designs. Hence, the theme and decorations of the event will be quirky, cute and abstract. Besides, local DJ or band will be invited to play during the fashion presentation. The estimated budget for the entire event was RM12,3000. However, sourcing sponsor are required to reduce the cost and supply gifts for door gifts. The ticket price for early birds who purchase within the first 2 weeks of ticket selling would be RM30 and the regular price is RM 40. As seen in the slide, a weekly timeline on tasks needed to be done was also included ranging from marketing planning, venue sourcing, contacting designers and makeup artist to printing materials. After presenting the concepts feedback and questions by lecturer and fellow classmates were given which came down to a few conclusions.
Feedback from lecturer
The major concern given from the feedback was the purpose of the fashion presentation.
"The main purpose of the fashion presentation was solely drifting towards a marketing event for the designers as the activity purely involves presenting collections of the designers."
This point was further convinced when the theme revolve around the inspiration behind the collection.
Other feedback was:
2. The presentation outlook wasn’t professional.
3. Budget plan was undervalued.
4. Fashion design students were not seen to be able to play their roles for the event.
Questions from classmates
The first question raised by a classmate was
"How to decide on a theme when the 3 designers’s collection involved have a different inspirations behind each collection?"
Answer:
This question was expected by both team member as it was one of the challenge faced while planning for the event as well. The answer given was to have a balance or a common style that 3 of the designers share and with their approval as well. For example, the abstract artsy style of Man Chien can be implemented on wall decor such as paintings and wallpaper for the partitions or wall in the venue while the makeup and hairstyle of the models can be quirky and cute.
"How are models going to interact with the audience?"
Answer:
For the fashion presentation, models would not be interacting with the audience. Models will be standing or posing on the platform.
This blog post for initial event proposal ends here as it covered all of the proposal, presentation, Q&A session and solutions. In the next blog post, the author will be sharing an amended fashion event proposal, providing a solution for all the concerns and suggestions raised, providing a solution and a better plan for the proposal.
