Students were required to select a subculture of their preference, research, create a mood board and a total of 5 looks for one of their midterm tasks. The subculture chosen was Hippie.
Brief Introduction of Hippie Subculture
This Hippie subculture started in 1960s and was initially a youth movement originated in the United States and eventually spread out to other countries (Encyclopædia Britannica, 2017). The Hippie is considered as a counterculture as that time as their values and behaviour is different from the mainstream society (McCleary and McCleary, 2004). They embrace open sexual relationship, listen to psychedelic music and many used drug such as marijuana, Psilocybin mushroom and so on. Attending to music festival which lasted for days are one of their go to public gathering. The famous music festival was Woodstock which is a 3 day music festival. The Volkswagen type 2 is basically how they travel from places to places and camped in the vehicle as well. As seen in the mood board below, the Volkswagen was decorated colours, prints and patterns. It feels like the items they use in their daily life need to represent their value, beliefs and lifestyle. This further explains why they love to dress in bold colours, especially complimentary colours paired together, psychedelic patterns, tie dye print and much more. Besides, the Hippie is much involved in promoting peace, antiwar protest and environment development which explains the love and peace sign that resonates with them (McCleary and McCleary, 2004). They once took part in the opposition for the Vietnam War and the first World Environment Day was held in 1970 (McCleary and McCleary, 2004). Till now, the belief, value and lifestyle of the Hippie still exist. Festivals like the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is extremely popular within the youth crowd in United States. The clothing style of Hippie had a major influence towards the Bohemian style which was a major trend a few years back.

Hippie Mood Board

As seen above is the Hippie subculture's mood board created by the student. The student have included the lifestyle, film inspired by the Hippie subculture, makeup, symbols, prints, colours and modern interpretation of the Hippie subculture through editorial photoshoots, campaign and runway. From the mood board, it can see seen that the hippie lead a free lifestyle and surround themselves with cigarettes, drugs, music festivals and group gatherings. According to the student's research, the Hippie did not embrace a glam makeup habit to their lifestyle. Instead, they opt for face paint for festivals and outings. In terms of hair and accessories, the Hippies wore their hair long, braided, messy and flowy. Besides, they've included feathers in both their hair and accessories. For colours, they were often seen pairing complementary colours together. For example , purple with yellow. Due to their love for psychedelic music, it influences the print that they're attracted to as well, psychedelic prints and tie-dyes.
Women's Hippie Looks

As seen above is the 3 women's look created to interpret Hippie's style using modern and contemporary clothing items. The student have incorporated full head to toe accessories to the looks from headpieces (turban, headpiece, feather extensions), body accessories( necklace, bracelet, henna tattoo) to bags. Since the Hippies spend a lot of time travelling from places to places and especially in festival locations where the ground is muddy and wet, the student have chosen boots as the footwear for both looks. However, the boots are embellished with embroideries and floral prints, unlike the standard plain booths to enhance the Bohemian style. Besides, the student have styled all 3 looks with head accessories like turbans, feather extensions and headbands to go with their flowy, thick hair. For clothing wise, prints and details like fringe, tie- dye, floral, feather and tassels are incorporated in the looks with long and flowy silhouettes.
Men's Hippie Looks

After creating 3 women's look as mentioned, the student finished the Hippie's look with 2 men's outfit. As seen above, prints on prints are incorporate in both looks. Just like the women's look, the men's look contains a lot of accessories as well from bandana headbands, bucket hat, sunglasses, stacked / multiple rings, beaded necklace and watches. The reason why beaded necklaces and bracelets are chosen is because during the 60s, the Hippies are often seen in crafty bracelets like friendship bracelet. To recreate the artisanal look to it, beads are a great choice. On look 4, the shirt have a lace detail to enhance femininity . Besides, the bell bottom and cardigan makes the outfit flowy. To enhance the bohemian vibe, fringe detailing and braided belt details were chosen.
